A shape in the reader not in the string

Nothing about the middle of these addresses is different from the ends. The symbols are drawn from the same alphabet, they are no denser, and the arithmetic on this board finds no structural difference between one region and another.

The difference is entirely in the reader. Attention is strongest where a thing starts and where it stops, and weakest in between. That is an ordinary property of how people handle sequences and it applies to phone numbers, reference codes and long strings alike.

The count under stated assumptions

Assume a front glance reaches the end of the shared opening and a back glance takes in a handful of characters. What is left is 47 characters, and that is the middle.

The sparkline in the third tile shows symbol variety across eighths of one address, and it is deliberately unremarkable. Variety does not dip in the middle. There is no measurable feature there for the eye to catch on, which is part of why nothing catches.

Why this is the expensive kind of blind spot

The information in a string of this shape is where the strings differ, and they differ across the whole span after the shared opening. That means the middle is not merely a large part of the string, it is a representative part, and skipping it skips a representative sample of everything that distinguishes one address from another.

A substitution placed in the middle survives every fast check. It survives the front glance, it survives the tail glance, and it survives the landmark reading people do around digits. It only fails a comparison that walks the whole string.

Working with the blind spot instead of against it

You are not going to develop even attention across 56 characters by deciding to. The realistic responses are structural rather than motivational.

The strongest one is not reading at all. Copy the string, paste it, and let the machine handle the comparison. The second strongest is chunking: break the address into fixed blocks and treat each block as its own small task with its own start and end, which manufactures the attention peaks you naturally have and spreads them along the string. The weakest response, and the most common, is deciding to concentrate harder. It works for about one address.

What the panel is not claiming

It is not claiming anything has ever been substituted in the middle of any of these addresses. This site does not monitor, does not compare against outside sources, and would have no way to know.

It is claiming something narrower and more useful: that if a substitution were going to survive an ordinary reader, the middle is where it would sit, and the number of unread characters is large enough to make that a comfortable hiding place.

Why landmarks make the blind spot bigger

Reading by landmark feels like a solution and is part of the problem. People find their place in a long string by looking for something distinctive, usually a digit or a doubled symbol, and then read outward from it.

That produces a check concentrated around whatever your eye already noticed. The characters between landmarks get skipped, and the skipped regions are chosen by salience rather than by position, so they are not even a random sample of the string.

It also means two people checking the same address will check different parts of it, both feel thorough, and neither cover the middle. If you want an even check you have to impose the evenness yourself, by counting, which is the whole argument for blocks.

Reading this panel wrong

  1. Reading the unread count as measured behaviour.It follows from an assumption about glancing that is stated in the prose. Nobody was observed and no reading was timed.
  2. Reading the flat sparkline as a problem with the chart.The line is flat because symbol variety really is even along the address. A flat true line is better than an interesting false one.
  3. Taking this as an allegation about the published addresses.It is a statement about where a substitution would hide in any long string. This board makes no claim about the strings it prints beyond how they are made up.

What this panel is not: evidence of tampering. It is a description of attention, applied to a string of a known length.
